Purple Top White Globe Turnip Seeds

Brassica rapa

First-time growers will be pleasantly surprised! This root crop that has fed the world's people for thousands of years can be eaten fresh, roasted, or used like potatoes, even mashed! Turnips store particularly well. Fun fact: The old Irish tradition of putting lit embers inside a hollowed out turnip was the inspiration for Jack O'Lanterns.

Coverage & Planting Details

Coverage This packet sows up to 124 feet.
Row Spacing 18"
Seed Depth ¼"
Seed Spacing A group of 3 seeds every 4"–6"
Thinning Thin to 1 every 4"–6"
Germination 5–10 days
Start Indoors Not recommended; roots sensitive to disturbance.
Direct Sow RECOMMENDED. 2 to 4 weeks before your average last frost date, and when soil temperatures reach 50°F, ideally 65°–80°F. Successive Sowings: Every 2 weeks up to 8 to 10 weeks before your average first fall frost date. Mild Climates: Sow in fall for cool–season harvest.
Growing & Harvesting For the most tender turnip, harvest when roots are no larger than 2" in diameter; however, a 3" root will still be of quite good quality. If allowed to grow larger, up to 6", the quality will not be the best for raw use, but will be fine for cooking. If sown for baby greens, harvest greens at 2"–4" tall. Harvesting no more than 25% of the plant's leaves at a time will not affect the plant's ability to produce large roots.

Surprised by how well these turnips grew

I've never grown turnips, but I thought I would try them this year. Every seed I planted germinated (8) and they all grew perfectly. I didn't know how big their leaves were going to be so I would probably space them out a bit more next year, but I am definitely going to keep these in the rotation.

    Delicious and easy to grow

I like the flavor of this variety, and the fact that the turnips grew really well despite me not thinning them at all at the beginning of the season :-) Some were bigger, while others a little smaller, but they still thrived. The roots had a mild flavor and good texture, and the seed had a high germination rate. Highly recommend!

"3 to 5 inch wide leaves"....hahaha, if turnips are given ideal growing conditions (southern FL in mid-winter, for example, with organically amended soil), leaf _surfaces_ will be well in excess of 1 foot long and 9 inches wide.
